How to Pack


Key Items

  • Inventory your items.

  • Plan out your items, and consider using towels and bedding to cushion the bottom of boxes.

  • Ensure all clothes, towels, and bedding are clean and completely dry.

  • Perishable items – discard them; they cannot be stored.


What Fits into an 18”X18”X24” Box

Examples provided below are estimates to help you inventory and planning purposes only.

  • Clothes Example

    • 6-10 pairs of shoes

    • 10 pairs of pants

    • 15 shirts

    • Underwear

  • Dorm Items Example

    • 2 Sheet Sets

    • 1 Comforter

    • 2 Pillows

    • 1 Desk Lamp

    • Power strip/Extension cord

    • String Lights

  • School Supplies (ensure that the weight of the box is manageable)

    • 10 books

    • Notebooks

    • Printer (ensure you bubble wrap the printer)

    • Fill the rest of the box with light, soft items to fill any voids in the box


Desk lamp

  • Remove the light bulb * lampshade

  • Use bubble wrap to wrap the lamp

  • Place some crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap on the bottom of the box

  • Place the bubble-wrapped lamp into the box

  • Fill the voids around the lamp with crumpled packing paper, bubble wrap or even your clothes.

  • If the lampshade fit on top, place it there, otherwise place in on the top of another packed box.

  • Also fill any voids around the lampshade with crumpled packing paper, bubble wrap or even your clothes

  • Wrap the light bulb with bubble wrap and place at the top of the box with the lampshade.

  • Seal the box with the packing tape

Standing Lamp

  • Remove the lampshade and the light bulb and disassemble the lamp.

  • As with the desk lamp, wrap the disassembled lamp in bubble wrap.

  • Place some crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap on the bottom of the box

  • Place the bubble-wrapped lamp into the box.

  • Fill the voids around the lamp with crumpled packing paper, bubble wrap or even your clothes.

  • If the lampshade fits on top, place it there; otherwise, place it on top of another packed box.

  • Also fill any voids around the lampshade with crumpled packing paper, bubble wrap or even your clothes

  • Wrap the light bulb with bubble wrap and place at the top of the box with the lampshade.

Kitchen items

Silverware

  • Place the different groups of silverware (forks, spoons, butter knives) into separate sturdy plastic resealable zipper bags. 

  • Press out all of the air and seal the zipper plastic bags.

  • Wrap each bag in bubble wrap, packing paper or your clothes and place into a box

  • Plastic kitchen utensils – Wrap in packing paper and place into a box

Sharp Knives

  • If you have blade guards or sheaths, place them on the knives

  • Wrap each knife separately in bubble wrap of packing paper

  • Place the knife on one edge of the paper or wrap, with the sharp edge facing away from you.

  • Fold the paper or wrap over the sharp edge, then roll the knife into the paper or wrap until fully covered. Make sure the sharp edge is completely encased and cushioned.

  • Secure the wrap with tape, avoiding sticking the tape directly on the knife to avoid sticky residue.

  • Place the wrapped and bundled knives into the box. If there’s extra space, fill it with crumpled packing paper or additional bubble wrap

Keurig/Coffee maker

  • Clean and dry  the coffee maker prior to packing

  • If there is a glass carafe, place bubble wrap or packing paper into the carafe.  Then wrap it with bubble wrap.

  • Wrap the main part of the coffee maker with bubble wrap, packing paper or towels. 

  • Place a cushioning layer of bubble wrap, packing paper or towels on the bottom of a box

  • Place the main part of the coffee maker into the box.

  • Place the wrapped removable parts around the main unit.

  • Fill any gaps with crumpled packing paper, bubble wrap or towels, ensure movement into box is minimized.

  • If placing other items into the box, ensure they are not items that can damage the coffee maker.

Desk Items - books, files, notebooks, staplers, pens, etc.

  • Files and notebooks - Sort through your files and notebooks. Discard or shred any documents that are no longer needed to reduce the volume of items to move.

  • Organize the remaining files and notebooks to make unpacking and locating specific documents easier.

  • Place large books on the bottom of the box, then layer files on top.

  • Wedge packing paper of small items into any voids to avoid movement.

  • Avoid overpacking and consider layering light items such as clothes on top to ensure the weight of each box is manageable.

Electronics - Video game consoles, external hard drives, small portable speakers, neon accent lights

  • Wrap each individual electronic component in bubble wrap.

  • Layer the bottom of a box with bubble wrap or towels.

  • Place the largest and heaviest electronic components in the box first.

  • Place the other wrapped electronic devices into the box.

  • Fill voids with bubble wrap, packing paper, or clothes.

  • Consider layering cushioning items such as clothes, bedding, and pillows on top to minimize movement in the box and ensure the weight of the box is manageable. 

Televisions – Use the suppled TV box or add one to your storage package

  • Remove any items connected to the TV including streaming devices, external cords, and the TV stand.

  • TV Stand – place the screws in a zippered plastic bag and wrap them with the TV stand.

  • Cover the TV first with the anti-static bag and then the foam cover.

  • Place the foam corner guards on each of the TV’s four corners.

  • Insert the TV into the assembled TV box. If the TV components can fit into the box, place them there. Ensure you place them on the back side of the TV to prevent damage to the TV screen.

  • Seal the box with the packing tape.

Small refrigerators – Important - Unplug your refrigerator TWO days prior to pick up

  • Defrost, Clean, and dry the inside of the refrigerator.

  • Wrap the refrigerator 2-3 times with the supplied plastic wrap 

  • Bundle and wrap the cord with the plastic wrap so it does not dangle.

  • Wrap the refrigerator with the supplied packing blanket.

  • Wrap the blanket with the supplied plastic wrap.

Small bookcases, file cabinets, and plastic stacking drawers

  • If the item has doors or drawers, wrap the items with plastic wrap

  • Wrap the item in the supplied packing blanket.

  • Wrap the blanket with the supplied plastic wrap.

Dorm Vacuums, broom, mops

  • If you have multiple of these, wrap them together with the supplied plastic wrap.

  • Wrap them in the supplied packing blanket.

  • Wrap the blanket with the supplied plastic wrap.
